Day -11

Last night was well not so good.  She can put a check mark next to every side effect of Campath we were told about.  On a positive note she has slept about 15.5 hours of the last 17 and still no signs of movement.  Ativan and morphine are her new best friends.  She is such an amazing kid.  I think I am so used to her that I truly forget how amazing she really is.  Last night she was moaning and moaning so I went to get the nurse.  Came back in and she told me she had to go potty.  Get her to the restroom and she starts violently puking.  She looked at me and all she said was “I don’t like this chemo.” and that was it.  During rounds they said the next dose might be worse it might be better.  I’m really praying for better.  I was holding up well until the dressing change on the hickman.  Surgery put a new type of dressing on it and it wouldn’t come off.  She was in so much pain, it was just awful.  At least she’s peacefully sleeping.

Quick note with a bone marrow transplant you have a conditioning phase where you get chemo to make room in your bones for the donors cells to engraft. These days are considered negative days.  So on day -12 she got her first dose of chemo. Today is -11 and she gets her second dose of chemo.  On day 0 (July 2) she gets the bone marrow from this precious selfless 23 year old woman. Then you wait for engraftment.  The first 21-28 days after transplant are the most critical, then the first 100 days.  It takes about a year for her to have a fully functioning bone marrow and immune system.

John and I can’t thank all of you enough for all of the prayers and support.  We really couldn’t do without you.

I don’t know if you are able to get this but we found a dressing called Sorbaview was amazing for Michael when all other things either wouldn’t come off or made his skin just a mess. Something to file away if you need it! What an amazingly strong girl you have there, I think these kids put us adults to shame dealing with more than most will ever know. Thoughts are with you.

kimbell – today i picked zoey up from her dad’s and she was wearing a krispy kreme t-shirt. i told her how you used to love krispy kreme and about our weekend outings to the one by the house… she said “that’s one more way kimbell and i are exactly alike!”

so off we go for her haircut with courtney and courtney asks “what happened to her hair?” (recall zoey has had bangs now since may 7th) i told courtney that zoey decided she needed a change, and courtney said, “well, it could have been worse” as we turn and notice zoey is staring rather intently at the blond woman sitting next to her with short spiked hair and red streaks all through it!! i immediately visualized zoey with neon pink or purple strands in her hair – i wouldn’t put it past her, would you?!?

      we miss you!

      lots of love,
      chole & zoey

It’s so sad to read what all Kimbell is going through and how hard it is on the family and grandparents (Stitch too). Linda and I continue to pray for positive enduring results…. Keep the updates comings.

kimbell – you’re lucky you’re not having to eat my cooking lately. i recently had a brilliant idea to fix chicken kabobs, with grilled peaches and corn. well, when i set it on the table zoey looked at it and said “ooh, what IS this?” it honestly didn’t look that appealing; it was all covered in ash from the grill.

today when i was at the grocery i saw spray cleaner for the grill (obviously my grill brush alone wasn’t doing the trick) and decided to get to work on my grill this afternoon. i’m happy to report that an hour + later my grill looks only slightly better than it did before; however, i am most certain i now qualify for a role as a chimney sweep on mary poppins! i am covered in brown and black grit – smudges on my arms, face, shirt – everywhere!! 🙂 thank heavens you and zoey aren’t here this afternoon, i have a feeling you two (a.k.a. double trouble) would grab the water hose and squirt me, down laughing the whole time!
