Thyroid Storm again…

Well poor K, things just aren’t going well for her.  Her pulse was in the 160’s the Friday before last so we went to the ER and she was admitted.  They added more drugs which helped her heart and found out she was in a thyroid storm from free T3.  Apparently T3 is way more toxic then T4 so while her T4 was going down her T3 was so high the computer couldn’t measure it.  Sunday night she started throwing up and got so incredibly sick that they considered moving her to ICU.  It was absolutely horrible, we had two nurses in our room at all times and more nurses outside the room working on getting more meds, conversing with doctors, doing laundry you name it.  Turns out on top of the thyroid storm she got norovirus which she then shared with not only John and I but my parents too!  By Halloween day I was running out of the hospital and my dad was taking over!

Thank you Gigi for taking pictures of my princess and her prince charming Stitch on Halloween.  At least she was able to dress up for a little bit and put a smile on her face for a little while.  She loves your visits.  Kimbell didn’t get to go trick or treating which is a huge deal for her, we LOVE Halloween.  She was crushed 🙁  Kimbell finally came home on all her new meds but was so sick from all of it she pretty much laid around the rest of the week while the rest of us were dealing with noro.

On Saturday Kimbell’s pulse skyrocketed again and we realized that while we were sick she wasn’t taking all of her medicine.  We are now back on track but unfortunately two of the drugs – high dose steroids and SSKI can only be taken a short while before they cause more damage then good so time will tell.  Her heart rate is still elevated and I had a long talk with the doctor last night.  We will run labs on Friday and wait for the labs over the weekend at which time they will see if they need to increase one of her meds some more.  The other meds she is maxed out on.  She is still not stable enough for surgery.  This has by far been one of the most challenging times we have been through in the last 13 years and it breaks my heart.  Your thyroid effects everything in your body and I mean everything including your mental state.  You can’t sleep, your organs are all in overdrive, you shake, you can’t think, every part of your body is just a mess.  I don’t think John and I realized how sick she was.  I mean we’ve been through so much with her and somehow with the grace of God she always always comes through and with a smile on her face.  I’m sure she will come through this eventually but definitely not with a smile in her face which is so different for her.  Her doctor said we have a very low threshold for going back to the hospital as they are very concerned and she was on the fence of making me take her back in last night.  We are supposed to being going on a cruise on 11/26.  This cruise is such a big deal to all of us, we booked it in April.  Last night the doctor said if she doesn’t improve we cannot go on the cruise.  I told Kimbell, thinking it would entice her to be vigilant with her medicine.  It backfired in a big way.  She is so incredibly upset and feels like nothing is going her way.  She can’t do anything physical b/c of her current condition even though she wants to, she barely makes it to school, she’s behind in school b/c of all the school she misses, it just kind of the perfect storm of everything not going the way it should.  So if you can please please pray that these meds start working so she can go on her cruise.  She was so excited and now she is just crushed.

K needs a lot of support right now and I can’t thank you enough for those that have commented, come to visit, texted, or sent her a care package.  It means the world to all of us but most importantly to K b/c life is really rough right now.  Please pray her meds start working and she can go on vacation that she was so looking forward to.  Last but not least November is Marrow Awareness month, please sign up to be a bone marrow donor at www.bethematch.org  If it wasn’t for a brave young lady in Wisconsin K wouldn’t be alive today 🙂

Love,

P, J, K and Stitch
